Decorative Lighting Design Trends

Apart from changing the wall color, nothing changes a room’s appearance more dramatically than lighting. And today’s homeowners have many more ways to revamp their homes with lighting designs than ever before. The kitchen, for example, up to just a few years ago had a single lighting fixture in the center of the ceiling.

Nowadays, you can have under-cabinet lighting, above cabinet lighting, inside-cabinet lighting, a chandelier over the table, two or three pendants over the island, and recessed lighting wherever necessary. Two of the most popular fixtures offering extra sources of light are chandeliers and sconces.

Today’s chandeliers typically blend traditional elements with modern materials, so for example, fixtures using alabaster and satin nickel are quite popular. Even in a contemporary atmosphere, by using satin or brushed nickel instead of chrome, you can substitute the high tech look for a warmer feel. Plus, it becomes more flexible, which allows it to mix with other styles.

Wall sconces are currently enjoying a renewed popularity, by adding a certain ambience in the dining room, or flanking a bathroom mirror or even a fireplace in the living room. Just like chandeliers, wall sconces have grown to accommodate cathedral ceilings. Just a few years ago, most sconces were around six to eight inches high. Now, you can obtain sconces that are 20 to 32 inches high. That said, it is important to use sconces suitably to fill large vertical vacant spaces. Sconces can be fitted between 60 and 72 inches from the floor. In romms with a ten to twelve-foot ceiling, or maybe great rooms with double that height, sconces may look more attractive at heights over 72 inches.

Recessed lighting typically makes a room feel more spacious because it actually takes up less visual space in the room. Since the light cans are set deep into the ceiling itself, there is nothing hanging down to detract from the visual space of the ceiling. Recessed lighting also makes a room look bigger due to an effect called ‘wall washing’. Wall washing is an effect that casts more light around the room using the trim. Wall washed trims involve using a directional reflector and a light scoop that directs the light towards the wall. In the case of a sloping ceiling, an ‘eyeball trim’ is used.

Track lighting is wonderful because of its flexibility and provides ambient, task or accent lighting in any lighting system. For example, a cabinet can become a showplace for your cherished collectiblesby simply installing track lighting above them. If its a more high-tech feelyou are looking for, a flexible rail lighting system can offer track lighting a new look. Suspended, from the ceiling, rather than mounted flush, a rail lighting system allows you to create a continuous design with the rail itself, which makes it another component of the overall design. So if you were to use matching glass and metal finishes, the rail can stylishly repeat a design or motif you have used elsewhere in the home.

With so many choices available, it can be easy for homeowners to become overwhelmed when making lighting decisions. However, if in doubt, stay simple. The more ornamental you get, the more difficult it will become to mix into your existing home design and the more likely your fixtures will become dated. Talk to sales staff in the lighting showrooms you visit. Remember, they work with lighting almost every day, and get to know what is popular and they have a good idea of what will work in different situations.
